CUTTING BOARDS

End-grain cutting boards require specific care to maintain their integrity and longevity. After each use, wash with warm, soapy water and dry thoroughly. Avoid soaking the board in water or using the dishwasher. Regularly oil the board with food-grade mineral oil to prevent drying and cracking.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

Cleaning:

  • Wash immediately after use: Scrape off food particles and wash with warm, soapy water using a sponge or soft brush.
  • Avoid prolonged water exposure: Do not soak the board in water or leave it sitting in a damp area.
  • Dry thoroughly: After washing, dry the board with a clean towel and allow it to air dry standing on its edge to ensure both sides dry completely.

Oiling:

  • Regular oiling is crucial: Oiling helps prevent the wood from drying out and cracking.
  • Use food-grade mineral oil: Apply a generous amount of mineral oil to the board with a clean cloth, ensuring all surfaces are covered.
  • Wipe off excess oil: After applying the oil, wipe away any excess to prevent a sticky surface.
  • Frequency: Oil the board every few weeks or as needed, depending on usage and the board's condition.

Other Important Tips:

  • Never put in the dishwasher: The extreme heat and water can cause the wood to warp, crack, or splinter.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals: Do not use bleach or abrasive cleaners on your cutting board.
  • Store properly: Store the board on its edge or in a drying rack to allow for proper air circulation.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures: Do not place the board near heat sources like stoves or radiators.
  • Use both sides: Rotate and use both sides of the board to prevent uneven wear.

LEATHER

Full grain vegetable tanned leather requires specific care to maintain its natural beauty and durability. Regular cleaning, conditioning, and protection from the elements are key. Avoid over-conditioning, excessive water exposure, and direct heat, as these can damage the leather.

Cleaning:

  • Regular Dusting: Use a soft, dry cloth or a horsehair brush to remove dust and dirt regularly.
  • Damp Cloth: For minor dirt or stains, use a slightly damp (not wet) cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or excessive water.
  • Saddle Soap: For deeper cleaning, use a mild saddle soap sparingly, following the product instructions. Allow the leather to dry naturally, away from direct heat.

Conditioning:

  • Natural Leather Conditioners: Apply a natural leather conditioner, oil, or cream designed for vegetable-tanned leather every few months or as needed.
  • Application: Use a clean cloth to apply the conditioner in a thin, even layer. Allow it to absorb for a few hours, then buff with a clean cloth.
  • Avoid Over-Conditioning: Do not over-saturate the leather, as this can weaken it.

Protection:

  • Water: Vegetable-tanned leather is more susceptible to water damage than other types. If it gets wet, blot the water with a soft cloth and allow it to air dry naturally, away from direct heat.
  • Sunlight: Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, as it can cause the leather to darken and dry out.
  • Heat: Keep leather away from heat sources like radiators or hair dryers, as this can cause cracking and damage.

Other Tips:

  • Patina: Vegetable-tanned leather develops a unique patina over time, darkening and softening with use. Embrace this natural process.
  • Storage: Store your leather goods in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture.
  • Minor Scratches: Scratches can often be buffed out with a soft cloth or horsehair brush.
